Antonio de Saavedra y Leiba, el venerable Deán de la Catedral de Trujillo
Corrìa el año 1674, cuando la peste bubónica asolaba a Trujillo. Mons. Saavedra promovió entonces una peregrinación de la venerada imagen de la Virgen de la Candelaria del Socorro, desde Huanchaco hasta la Catedral. La peste cesó, y fue entonces acordado que como agradecimiento cada cinco años dicha imagen de la Virgen repetiría su peregrinación a Trujillo. Así, desde 1681 quedaron instituídas las tradicionales bajadas quinquenales, con un itinerario y ceremonial, para esto engalanò la Catedral de Trujillo, reconstruyó y embelleció al Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Socorro en Huanchaco.
Hizo construir, a medio camino entre Trujillo y Huanchaco, la Capilla de San José para que sirviese de estancia o «pascana» durante las «Bajadas del Socorro»
En el presbiterio del Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Huanchaco, existía un antiguo retrato al óleo del ejemplar sacerdote, datado del siglo XVIII. Muestra a un eclesiástico aún joven, de facciones agradables, mirada penetrante y gran determinación. En la parte inferior del lienzo se podía leer: «Yace sepultado en este templo, lugar que fue de sus mayores delicias y donde tuvo siempre fijo el corazón el Licenciado Antonio de Saavedra y Leiba (….)». Y la frase final predecía: «(…) su memoria vivirá en la de todos».
