En Trujillo las primeras reformas sanitarias de los cementerios fueron impulsados por el obispo Baltasar Martínez Compañón, quien ordenó el traslado de los cadáveres debajo del atrio de la Catedral a una bóveda subterránea debajo del Tribunal de Diezmos, puesto que los canales de agua que se repartían a través de la ciudad muchas veces causó filtraciones y ciénagas, ocasionando el malestar de la población, aquejada por la pestilencia y suciedad que emanaban de este ambiente, ocasionando enfermedades y epidemias. El terreno para el cementerio fue donado por don Juan José Pinillos, creemos que debió ser el coronel español Juan José Martínez de Pinillos y Larios, esposo de doña María Josefa Agustina de Cacho y Lavalle, hija heredera de la mencionada María J. Lavalle y Cortés, propietaria del terreno del cementerio en 1814.

El Cementerio General de Miraflores es el más importante de la ciudad de Trujillo, fue creado el 2 de diciembre de 1832. Actualmente depende de la Sociedad de Beneficencia de Trujillo y cuenta con un área de 60.838.00 metros cuadrados. Se encuentra ubicado entre las Avenidas Miraflores y Túpac Amaru.
