Fundación BBVA conmemoró los 286° años del natalicio del Obispo que encargó elaborar más de mil 400 láminas de la Intendencia de Trujillo
En la conmemoración, el último 10 de enero, de los 286 años del natalicio del Obispo Baltazar Jaime Martínez Compañón y Bujanda, la Fundación BBVA, celoso guardián de su obra, destacó que el Códice Trujillo o Códice Martínez Compañón es un enorme legado precursor en el campo de la antropología, historia y costumbres de nuestra historia virreinal.
Precisamente, en su ministerio como Obispo de la Intendencia de Trujillo, entre los años 1781 y 1785, cuando Martínez Compañón acompañado de artistas locales anónimos, emprendió la expedición científica y etnográfica que concluyó en nueve tomos de un Códex con preciosas acuarelas que ilustran las costumbres de la sociedad virreinal, danzas, flora y fauna de la región.
El 67% de estas ilustraciones están dedicadas a la naturaleza: botánica y zoología, y un 33% a los oficios, costumbres y tradiciones de la época, pero desde una visión etnográfica y antropológica. Para Martínez Compañón, hombre forjado a la lumbre de la ilustración europea, su registro constituía una obra integradora acorde con los estudios académicos en los que había sido formado.
En Trujillo, los facsímiles de la colección completa del códice Trujillo del Perú se exhiben en la sala permanente de la Casa de la Emancipación, dedicada a este incansable peregrino de la investigación. Acompañan a estos tomos, una réplica al óleo del retrato del obispo pintado por el artista Benito Cerna, algunos ornamentos litúrgicos de la época y un video en el que se aprecian las acuarelas con fondo musical de fines del siglo XVIII.
RECUPERACIÓN DE LA MEMORIA
Un remate en la Casa Sothebys en Nueva York en 1978, le permitió al Banco Continental, hoy BBVA, adquirir dos de los tomos originales de la colección Truxillo del Perú de Martínez Compañón. El primero compuesto de 64 acuarelas costumbristas y el segundo de 56 dibujos, en su mayoría de aves.
La Fundación Edubanco (hoy Fundación BBVA) publicó en 1997 “Trujillo del Perú”, un estudio de las acuarelas recuperadas por el banco con textos de Pablo Macera, Arturo Jiménez Borja e Irma Franke. Los originales de estas acuarelas actualmente se exhiben en el Museo de Arte Lima, gracias a un convenio firmado entre estas dos instituciones. El libro se encuentra disponible completamente gratis en la Biblioteca Virtual de la Fundación BBVA.
